Root Breakdown

Root-derived
a-to, toward, near
+
droitstraight, right
=adroit

From French à droit, "toward the right / properly." The droit traces back to Latin rēctus (straight, right) — the same root as rect, but reshaped in French. Because the right hand was seen as the skilled, "correct" hand, à droit came to mean doing something the right, deft way: adroit = clever and dexterous, the opposite of clumsy.
