Definitions

affect + -ed. From affect (af- 'to' + fac 'do' = act upon). The first sense is simply 'acted upon.' The second comes from another affect ('to put on, pretend') — an affected manner is one you deliberately put on, not natural. See affect.

Why It Means This

Watch the two senses: 'the affected area' (the area acted upon, e.g., by a flood) is neutral, but 'an affected accent' (a put-on, fake accent) is critical. Same spelling, two different affect verbs underneath.
