Root Breakdown

Root-derived
belli-connector
+
gercarry, bear, perform, conduct
+
-entperforming, being in a state
=belligerent

From Latin bellum (war) + gerere (to wage, conduct) + -ent = 'war-waging.' This is the 'conduct/carry on' side of gerere, not physical carrying: to gerere bellum was to 'carry on' a war. From literally being at war, it broadened to describe any person who is aggressive and itching for a fight.
