Root Breakdown

Root-derived

=college

From Latin collegium: col- (together) + leg (here from legere in its 'choose' sense, via collega 'colleague') = a body of people 'chosen together' into one association. The teaching institution is just the most familiar kind of such a body; the electoral college keeps the older, broader sense of 'a chosen group with one task.'

Why It Means This

College and colleague are twins. Both come from Latin collegium / collega — people 'chosen together' (col- + leg-) into one body sharing duties. English first used 'college' for any such organized group (a college of cardinals, a college of surgeons). The modern 'place of study' meaning grew out of self-governing communities of scholars who were, literally, colleagues bound into one body.
