From the sibling root cub (Latin cubāre, 'to lie down') + -icle (small) = a small room to lie down in. Originally a sleeping nook; modern offices borrowed it for the small partitioned space you work in. The 'lying down' faded, but 'small enclosed compartment' stuck.
