Root Breakdown

Root-derived
datgive
+
-esuffix
=date

From Latin data (Romae) — 'given (at Rome)' — the phrase that opened a Roman letter, recording the day it was handed to the courier. That first word, data, came to mean the day itself. So a date is literally 'the given day.' The romantic sense ('a date') is a much later English extension: a meeting given a fixed day.
