Root Breakdown

Root-derived
dia-through, across
+
logueword, speech, reason; study of
=dialogue

dia- (across, between) + logue (logos = words) = words passing between sides. Note dia- means 'between,' not 'two' — a dialogue can involve many parties, as in 'dialogue between nations.'

Root log still carries 50 more words

Why It Means This

The most misunderstood member of the family: dia- is not 'di-' (two). It means 'across' or 'between,' so a dialogue is words flowing back and forth — which is why a dialogue can have many voices, while a monologue (mono- = one) really is a solo speech.
