Root Breakdown

Root-derived
directstraight, guide, manage
+

=directly

direct (straight) + -ly (in the manner of) = in a straight, unblocked way. From the spatial sense (go directly home) it stretches to time (come directly = at once) — the shortest line, whether through space or through a schedule.

Usage Guide

Two senses to keep apart: the common "in a straight/direct way" (deal with it directly) and an older, chiefly British "immediately" (I'll come directly). In speech, "directly" for "at once" can sound a bit dated or regional; in most modern writing it means "in a direct manner."
