From Greek eklektikos: ek- (out) + leg (pick, choose, the Greek cousin of legere) + -ic = 'picking out.' An eclectic taste picks out the best bits from many different sources rather than sticking to one school. Same 'choose' idea as Latin select, arriving through Greek.

Why It Means This

Eclectic is the Greek twin of Latin 'select.' Both are ek/se- ('out') + leg/lect ('pick'). Where select picks the single best, eclectic picks freely from everywhere — a little of this, a little of that, the best bits from many traditions. It started as a label for ancient philosophers who refused to follow one school and instead chose ideas from all of them.
