From Greek oikos (household) + nomos (management): oikonomia was literally 'household management' — running a home, budgeting its food, dividing its tasks. Over time the scope widened from a single home to a whole nation's resources, and 'household management' became 'the economy.' The original thrift sense lives on in the second meaning: an economy is also any act of careful saving.
