en- (within) + erg (work) + -y (noun) = 'the work that is inside.' Greek energeia named the inner force that lets a thing act — its being-at-work. That single idea covers all of today's uses: a person's vigor, the fuel that runs machines, and the physicist's capacity to do work.

Why It Means This

Aristotle coined energeia to mark the difference between potential (a seed) and actuality (a growing plant) — being actively at work. Centuries later physics borrowed the word for the measurable capacity to do work, and everyday English kept the human sense: the inner fuel that lets you act. All three meanings are the same picture at different scales.
