Root Breakdown

Root-derived
ex-out of, former
+
pelpush, drive
=expel

ex- (out) + pel (push) = push out. The same shove works at three scales: push a student out of school (expel from school), push a diplomat out of the country, and push air out of the lungs. Whatever is unwanted gets driven outward.

Usage Guide

expel is the strong, formal word for forced removal — heavier than 'kick out' (casual) or 'dismiss' (jobs). Pattern: expel someone FROM a place/group. For schools and countries it's the standard term; for a job you'd use fire or dismiss, not expel.

Example Sentences

  • 1.

He was expelled from school for cheating in the final exam.

  • 2.

The government expelled two diplomats accused of spying.

  • 3.

Take a deep breath, then slowly expel the air.
