Definitions

v.

To shape material such as metal or plastic by forcing it under pressure through a die; to push or thrust out

(将金属、塑料等)挤压成型,挤出;推出,压出

Root Breakdown

Root-derived
ex-out of, former
+
trudethrust, push, shove
=extrude

ex- (out) + trud (push) = "push out." In modern use it's an industrial term: machines extrude plastic, metal, or pasta by forcing it under pressure through a shaped opening (a die), so it comes out in a fixed cross-section — tubes, wires, frames. The shove is aimed straight out through a hole.

Usage Guide

Mostly a technical/industrial word (manufacturing, materials science): extrude metal, plastic, rubber, or food. Its noun extrusion names both the process and the product (an aluminum extrusion). Rare in everyday speech — for ordinary "sticking out," use protrude or stick out instead.
