fict (a form of fac, 'shape/fashion') + -ion (act of) = 'a thing fashioned.' From Latin fictiō, 'a forming, a shaping.' Fiction is what the mind shapes out of imagination rather than reports from fact — which is why fiction is the natural opposite of fact (factum, 'a thing done').
