globe (the Earth) + -al (relating to) = 'relating to the globe.' Since the globe is the whole Earth, global means 'covering the entire world.' The earlier sense 'spherical' has almost disappeared in everyday English — when you say global warming or global brand, no one pictures a ball; they picture the whole planet.
