Root Breakdown

Native English
hostguest, host, stranger
=host

host is the worn-down form of Latin hospes (guest, host, stranger), arriving through Old French hoste. The middle of hospit collapsed into one syllable. The host is the side of the guest-host pair that does the welcoming — which is why it stretches naturally to a host country (welcoming a nation) and a talk-show host (welcoming an audience).

Easily Confused

host vs hostage — they look related and both come from the hospit family, but a host receives guests willingly, while a hostage is held against their will. Welcoming → host; held captive → hostage. (A separate, unrelated 'host' meaning 'a large number,' as in 'a host of problems,' comes from Latin hostis 'army' — same enemy branch, different sense.)
