Root Breakdown

Root-derived

=injection

in- (into) + ject (throw) + -ion (noun of action) = 'the act of throwing into.' An injection is medicine thrown into the body, or funds thrown into a business.

Why It Means This

Injection extends inject's metaphor into noun form. The medical meaning dominates everyday usage — getting a flu injection, an injection site. But the financial metaphor is equally established: a cash injection, a capital injection. In computing, 'SQL injection' describes malicious code forced into a database query — the most sinister version of 'throwing something in.'
