Root Breakdown

Root-derived
in-not, opposite of
+
tendstretch, extend
=intend

in- (toward) + tend (stretch) = "to stretch the mind toward" a goal. Note this in- means "toward," not "not." Picture aiming a drawn bow at a target: your intention is wherever your thoughts are pointed. To intend to do something is to have your mind already stretched in that direction.

Why It Means This

Intend comes from Latin intendere, "to stretch toward." The mental image is an aimed bow: your purpose is the target, your thoughts the arrow drawn back and pointed. This is why a whole cluster of meaning-and-aim words share the root — intention (the aimed-at goal), intent (firmly aimed), intense (stretched tight). When you intend something, your mind is already leaning in its direction.
