Root Breakdown

Root-derived
in-not, opposite of

vigilawake, watchful, alert
+
-ateto make, having
=invigilate

in- (here intensive, 'upon, over') + vigil (Latin vigilāre, keep watch) + -ate (verb) = 'to watch over.' English coined it for the academic job of supervising an exam so no one cheats. The watcher is an invigilator; American English usually says proctor instead.

Usage Guide

Chiefly British and Commonwealth English. In American English the usual verb is proctor (and the person is a proctor, not an invigilator). The word is almost always tied to exams; you invigilate an exam or invigilate students, not general meetings.
