Root Breakdown

Root-derived
judgelaw, right, oath, justice
+
-mentaction, result, state
=judgement

judge + -ment (result/state) = the result of judging. The three senses fan out from one act: the *capacity* to judge well (good judgement), the *opinion* produced (in my judgement), and the formal *ruling* of a court (the court's judgement).

Usage Guide

Spelling: judgement (with the middle 'e') is standard British; judgment (no middle 'e') is standard American and also used in legal English worldwide. Both are correct — pick one and be consistent.
