Root Breakdown

lever + -age (action, result) = the power a lever gives. The physical 'small force moves a big load' became a metaphor everywhere: leverage in negotiation (a small advantage that controls the outcome) and in finance (borrowed money that multiplies returns).

Usage Guide

- General: 'leverage' (n.) = bargaining power: have leverage over a supplier.

- Business jargon (v.): 'leverage our resources' = make full use of them — very common in corporate English, sometimes overused.

- Finance (n.): 'high leverage' = a lot of borrowed money relative to equity, which amplifies both gains and losses.

Example Sentences

  • 1.

The company used its size as leverage in the negotiations.

  • 2.

They leveraged social media to reach new customers.
