Root Breakdown

Root-derived
messsend, let go
+
-ageaction, state, collection
=message

From Latin missus (sent) → Late Latin missaticum ("something sent") → Old French message. So a message is, at root, simply "a thing that was sent." The mess- spelling hides the same miss root found in mission and missile.

Root miss still carries 88 more words

Why It Means This

Most learners never guess that message shares a root with mission and missile, because the spelling collapsed to mess- on its journey through French. But all three trace back to missus, "sent." A message is literally a sent thing; the abstract sense — "the message of the film" — is the idea the work sends to its audience.
