Root Breakdown

Root-derived
millithousand
+
-onact, process, state
=million

mille (thousand) + the Italian augmentative -one ('big') = milione, a 'great thousand,' i.e. a thousand thousands. Italian merchants needed a word for sums too large for Roman numerals, so they took 'thousand' and supersized it.

Why It Means This

Million keeps mille's figurative streak alive. 'Thanks a million,' 'one in a million,' 'I've told you a million times' — none of these is really counting to 1,000,000. Just like Latin mille could mean 'a vast number,' million often just means 'a huge, uncountable amount.'
