Root Breakdown

Root-derived

=nausea

From Greek nausia, literally 'seasickness': naus (ship) + the queasy state of being on one. English borrowed the sick feeling and dropped the ship, so nausea now describes stomach sickness from any cause — or, figuratively, moral disgust.

Why It Means This

Nausea is the surprise in the nav family: it has no obvious 'ship' in it, yet it's pure seasickness fossilized into a word. Ancient Greeks who got queasy on a rocking boat coined nausia from naus, 'ship'; landlocked speakers later applied it to any stomach-turning feeling, sea or no sea.
