Root Breakdown

Root-derived
orientrise, begin, be born
+
-ationsuffix
=orientation

orient (to align/turn toward) + -ation (noun) = the result of being aligned. From physical facing (the building's orientation) the word spread to mental 'facing': a person's orientation (their leanings) and an orientation program (which gets newcomers facing the right way).

Why It Means This

The three senses share one image: which way you face. A building has a physical orientation; a person has a mental one (political, sexual, religious leanings); and an orientation program physically and mentally turns newcomers to face their new surroundings.
