Root Breakdown

=pattern

A surprising member of the patr family. pattern is a worn-down form of Old French patron — the same patron (father-protector), but used in the sense of a "model" or "example" to copy, the way a patron sets the standard. English split the spelling: patron kept the "sponsor" sense, pattern took the "model to follow" sense, which then broadened to designs and recurring regularities.

Why It Means This

It seems unbelievable that pattern shares a root with father, but the chain is real: pater → patronus (a protector who serves as a model) → Old French patron (a model to copy) → English pattern. The "model/template" sense is the original one; "repeated design" came later because templates produce repetition.
