Root Breakdown

Root-derived
pro-forward, for, before
+
cessgo, yield, move
=process

pro- (forward) + cess (the cessus stem of cedere, "gone") = "a going-forward": the steps something moves through from start to finish. To process something is to move it forward through those steps. Same idea as proceed, but written with cess.

Usage Guide

Note the spelling link: process / proceed / procedure all share pro- + the same 'go' root, but with three spellings (cess / ceed / ced). Stress is even (PRO-cess) in both noun and verb in most uses. Common in tech (data process, process data) and bureaucracy (process an application).
