Root Breakdown
Root-derivedpro- (beforehand, in advance) + gram (something written) = 'a thing written down ahead of time.' A printed program tells you what will happen before it happens; a computer program is instructions written in advance for the machine to run. Every sense keeps this 'plan set down in writing' core.
Root gram still carries 10 more wordsUsage Guide
- Computing/AmE general: 'program' is the standard spelling everywhere.
- BrE for events/broadcasts: British English uses 'programme' (a TV programme, a training programme) but keeps 'program' for computer code.
- Verb forms double the m in BrE (programmed, programming); AmE allows single m (programed) but doubled is far more common even in the US.
