Root Breakdown

Root-derived
pro-before
+
mindig, mine, extract; (second branch) jut out, project
+
-entperforming, being in a state
=prominent

pro- (forward) + min (jut out, from minēre) + -ent (adj.) = 'jutting forward.' The literal sense survives in prominent cheekbones or a prominent nose, which physically project. From 'sticking out,' it became figurative: a prominent person or feature stands out from everything around it, so it is conspicuous and important.

Easily Confused

prominent vs eminent — Both come from minēre 'jut out,' but prominent juts forward (visible, conspicuous, can be neutral or even physical: a prominent nose, a prominent advertiser), while eminent juts up and is reserved for high distinction (an eminent surgeon). A scammer can be prominent; only a respected expert is eminent.
