Completely absorbed, fascinated, or engrossed.

全神贯注的,入迷的,出神的

Root Breakdown

Root-derived
raptseize, carry away, transport
=rapt

Directly the Latin past participle raptus 'seized, carried away.' To be rapt is to be so absorbed that you seem snatched out of the ordinary world — rapt attention means whatever holds you has, in effect, carried you off.

Usage Guide

Almost always attributive (before a noun): rapt attention, a rapt audience, a rapt expression, rapt silence. You rarely say 'I was rapt' on its own; instead say 'She listened, rapt' or use it before the noun. Don't confuse it with wrapped (covered) — same sound, no relation.

Example Sentences

  • 1.

The children watched the magician with rapt attention.

  • 2.

A rapt silence fell over the hall as she began to play.

  • 3.

He listened, rapt, until the very last word.

Easily Confused

rapt vs wrapped — they sound identical but are unrelated. rapt means 'absorbed' (rapt attention). wrapped means 'covered/enclosed' (wrapped in paper). The phrase 'wrapped up in his work' (absorbed) is a separate idiom and is spelled wrapped, not rapt.
