Root Breakdown

Root-derived
re-again, back
+
venuecome, arrive
=revenue

re- (back) + ven (come) = "that which comes back." The word came through French as a past participle, "returned." Money you put out into the world — through sales or work — flows back to you as return. A company's revenue is income coming back in; a government's revenue is tax money returning to the state.

Usage Guide

Revenue is the top line (total money in) — distinct from profit, which is what's left after costs. It is usually uncountable: say "revenue grew" not "a revenue." "Revenues" (plural) appears in formal finance for income from several sources. The IRS's old name was the Internal Revenue Service — revenue here = tax income.
