Root Breakdown

sem- ('one') + -plex ('fold') = 'one-fold.' Something folded only once has no hidden layers, so it is plain and uncomplicated. Compare complex (com- 'together' + plex 'fold' = woven of many folds): simple and complex are literally about how many folds reality has.

Why It Means This

The 'fold' image is worth holding onto. A simple thing is 'folded once' — flat, single-layered, nothing tucked away. A complex thing is folded many times over. That is why simple drifts between 'easy' (one step, not many) and 'plain' (one layer, not ornate): both come from the single fold.

Example Sentences

  • 1.

The recipe is simple enough for a child to follow.

  • 2.

She wore a simple black dress with no jewelry.

  • 3.

There's a simple explanation for what happened.

Easily Confused

simple vs simplistic — simple is neutral or positive (clear, uncomplicated). simplistic is negative: it means oversimplified, ignoring real complexity. A 'simple plan' is good; a 'simplistic plan' misses important details.
