From Greek stratēgos = stratos (army) + agein (to lead), the Greek cousin of Latin agere. A stratēgos was a general — literally an 'army-leader' — and strategy was his art of leading. The driving/leading sense of ag is exactly what a strategist does: lead a plan toward its goal.

Why It Means This

strategy hides a soldier inside it. The Greek stratēgos was an army-leader (stratos 'army' + agein 'to lead'), and his craft of leading troops became 'strategy.' That military root is why business and games borrow it: a strategy leads your forces — money, people, moves — toward victory.
