a-（没有，希腊语的「否定性 alpha」）+ theos（神）+ -ist（……的人）= 「没有神的人」。前缀不改变话题，而是把它抵消：theos 仍在中心，a- 删掉了对它的信仰。同一个 a- 也否定 amoral、atypical、asymmetric。
