conflate

con-（一起）+ flāre（吹）=「吹到一起」。原义是金属匠的：向炉火鼓风把不同金属熔成一块。由此产生现代义——把两样东西合并，尤其是错误地把两个不同的概念合并成一个。

为什么是这个意思

conflate 里的「吹」如今已看不见，这让它成为最不直觉的 flat- 词。现代用法几乎完全偏向「错误合并」义：conflate 相关与因果，或把一个人的观点与其所在党派的观点混为一谈，就是把两样本该分开的东西不该地熔成了一块。
