词根派生de-（彻底）+ termin（边界）= 把某事的界线最终划定。所有边界一标定，问题就有了答案——所以 determine 既是「精确确定」（determine the cause 查明原因），也是「决定/左右结果」（光有天赋并不 determine 成功）。

同一个动词有两种用法。determine + that/whether/wh- 从句多表「查明、确定」（determine whether it's safe 确定是否安全）；determine + 名词常表「决定、左右」（price determines demand 价格决定需求）。另有 be determined to do sth 是形容词义 = 下定决心的、坚定的，与「查明」无关。
