ex-（出）+ plor（哭喊）= 「边喊边搜寻」。最可能的画面是猎人拍打灌木、大声呼喊，把藏起的猎物赶到空地。呼喊渐渐从词义中淡出，只留下「搜寻」——所以 explore 如今表示彻底搜查一个地方或想法，去发现其中隐藏的东西。

explore 是 plor 家族里最大的惊喜。其他成员（deplore、implore）明白地与哭喊有关，explore 却把它彻底藏了起来。连接点是打猎：ex-（出）+ plōrāre（哭喊）描述呼喊着把猎物赶出藏身处。当年伴随呼喊的「搜寻」，是唯一留存下来的部分。
