hiero（希腊 hieros，神圣）+ glyph（雕刻）= 神圣的雕刻。埃及人把这些图画符号凿在神庙和陵墓墙上，一个图像可代表一个音、一个词或一整个概念。因在罗塞塔石碑破译前一直无法辨读，这个词也指任何令人费解的符号。
