neg（说不、否认）+ -ate（使……）= "把它抹成不"。negate 是对某事说"不"说得够狠，让它不再成立：否认一个说法（negate the rumor），或抹掉一个结果（the cost negates the savings）。第二个义项最常用——两股力相遇、归零。

为什么是这个意思

最有用的义项不是"否认"而是"抵消"。当一份收益和一份损失相等时，损失 negate 了收益——加起来等于零。可以把它想成减号的动词形式：negate 碰到什么，就把什么归零、抹掉。
