The most surprising member of the family. Latin ob- (toward) + portus (harbor) = opportunus, describing a wind blowing your ship toward the harbor. For ancient sailors, this was pure luck — the wind was doing the carrying for you. Over centuries, the maritime metaphor faded, but the meaning stuck: a favorable circumstance, a lucky opening. Its opposite inopportune (bad wind, bad timing) preserves the same image.

Latin im- (into) + portāre (carry) = to carry into. The concrete image: something being carried into a situation adds weight to it. If a piece of evidence is 'carried into' a trial, it matters — it's important. The physical metaphor (heavy, weighty) became the abstract meaning (significant, consequential). This is why we still say an issue 'carries weight.'

Latin sub- (from below) + portāre (carry) = to carry from underneath. Picture a hand under a falling object — that's the original image. This physical act of holding up extended into every domain: emotional support (carrying someone through hard times), financial support (bearing costs), technical support (keeping systems running). The metaphor is always the same: holding something up so it doesn't collapse.

The word sport comes from Old French desport, where des- (away) + port (carry) meant 'to carry oneself away' from work — to amuse yourself. Middle English shortened desport to sport, dropping the prefix entirely. So sport originally had nothing to do with athletics — it meant leisure and fun. The shift from 'amusement' to 'competitive physical activity' happened gradually over centuries. The archaic phrase 'good sport' (easygoing person) preserves the older meaning.

Italian portafoglio = porta (carry) + foglio (leaf, sheet of paper). Literally 'a thing that carries sheets.' It started as a case for carrying loose documents, then extended to an artist's collection of works (what you carry to show your abilities), and finally to a financial collection of investments. Each meaning shift kept the core idea: a curated set of things you carry together to represent value.
