About This Root
From Greek lyrikos (for singing to a lyre), from lyra (lyre). Originally described poetry meant to be sung with a lyre. In modern English: lyric (words of a song, or a short expressive poem), lyricist (one who writes lyrics), and lyrically (in an expressive, musical manner). The musical instrument gave its name to a whole genre of expression.
