Root Breakdown
Root-derivedestate is really the same word as state, both from Latin status ('standing, condition'), but estate came in earlier through Old French with an extra e-. It first meant a person's 'standing' or rank, then the property that standing rested on — your lands and goods. Hence real estate (landed property) and one's estate (everything left at death).
