From Latin gentilis, 'of the same family or good birth' (gen 'birth'). Gentle first meant 'well-born, noble' (hence gentleman, gentry); the assumption that the well-born were soft-mannered and refined shifted the word to 'mild, kind.' The behavior expected of nobility became the meaning.
