Definitions

Heads up: this is two different words wearing the same spelling. The 'relax/sleep' rest is a native Germanic word (Old English ræst) and is NOT from stāre. The 'remainder' rest does come through French from Latin restāre (re- 'back' + stāre 'stand' = 'to stay behind'), so only that sense belongs to the st- family.

Why It Means This

The two rests are a classic homonym trap. 'Take a rest' (Germanic) is about pausing to recover. 'The rest of the cake' (Latin restāre, 'to stand back / remain') is what stays behind once the rest is gone. Same four letters, two unrelated origins — only the 'remainder' rest is a true st- word.
