=restaurant

From French restaurant, literally 'restoring,' from restaurer (re- 'again' + the staur-/stāre 'set up, stand' family). It first named a rich broth that 'restored' your strength; by the 1700s a Parisian shop selling such restoratives took the name, and it shifted to mean the eatery itself.

Why It Means This

Surprisingly, restaurant and restore are the same family — both from restaurāre, 'to restore.' The original restaurant wasn't a building but a dish: a fortifying broth that restored a tired body. The shops that sold it took the name, and within a century 'restaurant' stopped meaning the soup and came to mean the place. The t is silent in the borrowed French pronunciation.
