Root Breakdown

Root-derived
re-again, back
+
sumetake, take up, consume
=resume

re- (again) + sume (take) = 'take up again.' You pick an activity back up after a break: resume talks, resume work. The noun résumé came separately through French, where it meant a 'summed-up' summary — which is how a job CV got the name.

Usage Guide

Two very different words share the spelling. The verb 'resume' (/rɪˈzjuːm/, re-ZOOM) means 'continue': resume work, resume talks. The noun 'résumé' or 'resume' (/ˈrezʊmeɪ/, REZ-oo-may) is a job CV — common in American English; British English usually says 'CV' instead. Don't confuse with 'résumé' = summary either; in everyday US usage 'resume' almost always means the job document.
