Sustenance is the noun of sustain. Sustain comes from Latin sustinēre 'to hold up from below' (sus- 'from below' + tenēre 'hold'). Sustenance is therefore whatever holds you up from underneath — most concretely the food that keeps your body going, and by extension any spiritual or emotional nourishment that keeps you standing.
