词根派生来自 cas-（cadere 的完成词干，「落」），经拉丁语 casus =「落下、落出来的结果」→ 事情如何落定、一种情形。从「落定的样子」引出「一种情形/情况」（in that case 那样的话），再到「法律或医学上的事项」（court case 案件、flu case 流感病例），甚至语法上的「格」——拉丁学者用 casus 表示名词如何「落入」句中的角色。

有意思的是，case（情形）和 case（箱子）感觉是一个词，其实来自两个词根。「情形」义来自 cadere「落」（casus = 事情怎么落定的）；「箱子/容器」义来自拉丁语 capsa（盛物的东西），二者无关。所以 a case of wine 用的是箱子义，而 in any case、court case 用的是「落出来、发生了什么」的义。语法上的「格」是个巧妙比喻：名词依其在句中的职责「落入」主格、宾格等。
