in-（进入）+ dent（牙）+ -ure（行为/结果）= 字面「带齿痕的东西」。中世纪契约在同一张纸上抄两遍，再沿一条锯齿状、齿形（indented）的线撕开；双方各执一半，两条锯齿边必须重新咬合才能证明文件为真。这份契约因防伪的「齿」而得名。

为什么是这个意思

这个词保存了一种已消失的中世纪做法。在签名和印章还不被普遍信任的年代，契约的两份相同副本会沿波浪线裁开。造假几乎不可能：伪造者得精确复制原来那条锯齿剪口。做法消失很久之后，名字留了下来，indenture 引申为任何具约束力的协议——最有名的就是把学徒和劳工跨洋运送的「契约奴役」（indentured servitude）。
