matter

matter 是拉丁 materia（「母质」、物质）经法语磨平后的形式——和 material 是同一个词，只是以更日常的样子进入英语。它保留了物理义（构成宇宙的 matter），再漂移：名词指「要处理的事」（a serious matter），动词指「有分量、要紧」（it doesn't matter）。这个动词是物质隐喻的抽象化——to matter 就是在局面里有分量。

为什么是这个意思
